Working Principle

The Hosokawa CT-Mixer is a conical, vertical ribbon blender especially designed for mixing of free flowing powders.


A central tapered screw ensures a constant motion and mixing of the whole batch, which results in short mixing times. The conical mixer is a convective mixer which creates low to medium shear forces during the process.

The products being mixed are subject to minimal mechanical en thermal stress. Therefore even fragile and heat sensitive products can be mixed with this mixer.

This mixer has the whole mass of product in movement and operates at tip speed between 1 and 5m/s which results in a very quick homogeneous product.

The Hosokawa CT-Mixer can be used for mixing of:

  • powders with powders

  • powders with liquids


  • The convective mixing effect is created by the following 3 factors:

  • The central helix conveys the material upwards along the vessel wall

  • The continuous movement of the rotor causes a continuous exchange of particles

  • In the centre of the mixing chamber, the product sinks by gravity to the bottom section


  • Main features of the CT mixer

    Mixing accuracy: Materials are mixed to the highest level of accuracy, even if some of the components are only present in minor quantities at a ratio of 1 to 100.000.

    Mixer design: In the Hosokawa CT-Mixer the conical vessel of the Vrieco-Nauta® mixer is used and this means that all the proven options, such as sample taker, Isem outlet valve, CIP solutions, etc can be used. Product lines are available especially for Pharma and food application in cantilevered execution till 6.000 litres.

    Flexibility in process: The Hosokawa CT-Mixer has a flexible working capacity from 10 - 100% of filling rate without loosing its mixing accuracy.

    Gentle mixing: The mixing process is accomplished with medium energy input and without generation of heat therefore powders can be mixed without damaging the structure.

    Fast and full discharge: Due to the fully conical vessel and the special designed Isem outlet valve discharge rates of up to 40.000 litre/hr are possible. Depending on product characteristics, levels of residues after discharge up till 0.001% can be achieved.

    Cleaning: These mixers are easy cleanable either in a dry way using special extra large doors on the vessel or in a wet way using spraying devices. CIP & SIP are available. This mixer is ideal for sterile application.
