It complies with Standard Test Method ASTM D6393-99 "Bulk solids Characterization by CARR Indices".
The fact that the behaviour of a powder can be "unpredictable" is a fact of life. Those of us who spend some time in the kitchen have experienced what can go wrong while e.g. trying to dose flour in a bowl. These things can be frustrating in and around the house, but can be dangerous in an industrial environment.
Bottom line is that much can be gained by being able to predict the behavior of a powder. Not to mention the advantage that can be achieved in view of quality control by being able to fully characterize the powder.
It has been developed to improve handling efficiency and accuracy in testing the bulk properties of dry powders. Bulk materials have inherent properties including particle size distribution, bulk density, particle shape, surface area, moisture content, cohesiveness, hygroscopic, etc. Bulk materials are characterized by these properties both in their behavior during production and in their use for the respective application.
Knowledge of bulk material properties is therefore essential to the manufacturer, the planning engineer, and the purchaser - whether the question is to check the consistency of the product quality or acquire the necessary data to enable planning and layout of the most efficient system to manufacture the bulk material. Especially important in this context is the flow behavior (flowability) and the flood behavior (floodability).
